If you have sewn at all in the past you may or may not have made your own curtains. If you do sew then you know that you can save a lot of money making the curtains if you do. The other thing about sewing your own curtains is they can be unique.
Measuring the windows before buying the fabric is necessary. You don’t want to buy too much but for certain you don’t want to buy too little. What if you get started only to find out you don’t have enough to finish and then have to stop until you get more fabric. Then worse happens, you cannot find more of that fabric or the next roll doesn’t quite match the roll you got your fabric off of. So make sure you get enough before you begin. It is better to have some leftover than not enough.
When deciding on how you are going to hang these new curtains is something you also need to take into account when measuring. If you hand them to the inside of the windows it will not take as much material and the window will look narrower. Hang the curtains to the outside and you can add width getting the illusion that the window is wider than it really is.
Add the extra fabric you are going to need for hemming when you measure. One to two inches on each side should be plenty. Once you have gotten all the measurements you are ready now to choose the fabric.
Choosing the fabrics and colors are plentiful when you look in fabric stores. If this happens to be your first endeavor you may want to keep it simple. When choosing the fabrics for your curtains you probably will want to go with two colors that will coordinate with each other. This can help give a layered look to them. A suggestion to you is, you want your curtains to make a statement but not be screaming it. What I mean by this keep the design sedated so that it adds beauty to the room not takes the attention from it.
Soft colors or pastel colors can easily adapt to most rooms but that does not mean that you should only use them. Bold striking colors used to make curtains can be beautiful and still not overpower the room. If you want more light to filter through your curtains you may want to go with the lighter curtains. Even without backing on the darker colors it can still darken a room more than you desire unless you pull them open.
You will also want to think about the type of material you want to use when making curtains. Thick or thin, textured or smooth, patterned or solid, there is so many to choose from. So consider all these things when deciding on the color and the type of material you want to use.
The use of the Internet today and shopping on-line gives you a wider range to choose from. Now you can do your shopping without ever having to go out. Once you have found a couple of good on-line dealers you will discover that you may prefer this type of shopping. You do have to take into account the cost of the shipping. It may or may not be worth it if the shipping cost is extremely high. I have felt that sometimes they want to make some money off the shipping and charge more than they really have to. Too many times on-line retailers have lost a sale because of it.
